Resin Driveways – Ask a professional

Resin Bound Stone driveway natural tan

Resin-bound paving has become an increasingly popular choice for driveways, patios, pathways, and other outdoor surfaces due to its durability, aesthetic appeal, and practical benefits. By combining natural aggregate stones with a high-quality resin binder, resin driveways provide a smooth, seamless, and highly permeable surface that enhances any property while offering long-term performance.

What is a Resin Driveway?

A resin-bound driveway is made by mixing natural or decorative aggregate stones with a clear resin binder before application. This process ensures that every stone is fully coated in resin, creating a strong, tightly bound surface with a smooth and uniform finish.

How is it Different from Resin-Bonded Surfaces?

Unlike resin-bonded surfacing—where resin is spread over the base and aggregate is scattered on top—resin-bound driveways offer several key advantages:

No Loose Stones – Since the resin and aggregate are mixed before laying, the surface remains intact, preventing stone displacement.
Fully Permeable – The porous structure allows water to drain naturally, reducing puddles, flood risks, and ensuring compliance with Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS).
Crack Resistance – The flexible resin-bound system can withstand minor ground movements and temperature fluctuations without cracking.

How Are Resin Driveways Installed?

Step 1: Preparing the Base

A suitable base—such as permeable tarmac or concrete—is essential for a long-lasting resin-bound surface. The area must be stable, clean, and level before application.

Step 2: Mixing the Resin and Aggregate

  • The resin binder (Part A and Part B) is mixed together using a low RPM mixer.
  • Once mixed, dried aggregate stones are added into a forced action mixer before the resin is poured in.
  • The mixture is blended for 1 minute, then binding sand (if required) is added and mixed for another 2 minutes to ensure an even coating.

Step 3: Laying the Resin-Bound Surface

  • The fully mixed material is emptied into a wheelbarrow and transferred to the prepared base.
  • A steel float is used to evenly spread the mixture to the desired thickness (typically 15-18mm).
  • The surface is left to cure for 6-8 hours for foot traffic and 24-48 hours for vehicle use.

Low Maintenance Requirements

One of the biggest advantages of a resin-bound driveway is its minimal maintenance needs. Unlike block paving or gravel, a resin surface resists weeds, cracks, and loose stones, ensuring long-term durability with very little upkeep.

Simple Maintenance Tips:

Regular Sweeping – Remove leaves, dirt, and debris to prevent surface clogging.
Twice-Yearly Power Washing – A gentle power wash keeps the surface clean and free from stubborn dirt or moss.
Prevent Algae & Moss Growth – Occasional cleaning reduces the risk of moss or algae buildup, maintaining slip resistance.

Why Choose a Resin Driveway?

Resin-bound driveways offer a unique combination of strength, beauty, and practicality that sets them apart from traditional surfaces.

Key Benefits of Resin Driveways:

Durability – Designed to withstand heavy foot and vehicle traffic while maintaining a pristine appearance.
PermeabilityWater drains naturally through the surface, preventing puddles and reducing flood risks.
Low Maintenance – No loose stones, no weeding, and no sealing required.
Customizable Designs – Available in a variety of colors and textures, allowing homeowners to create a surface that complements their property.
Crack Resistance – The flexible resin adapts to temperature changes, minimizing the risk of cracks or splits.

Resin driveways provide a long-lasting, visually appealing, and low-maintenance paving solution that enhances both residential and commercial properties. Thanks to their permeable nature, they support eco-friendly drainage while delivering a seamless, crack-resistant finish that lasts for years.

With simple maintenance like sweeping and power washing, a resin-bound driveway can remain in pristine condition for decades.
