How to Lay Resin Bound Stone: The Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Resin bound surface installation in progress with a seamless and durable finish.

Fusion-Bound Resin Binder is specifically designed for the installation of high-performance, permeable, and decorative resin-bound surfaces. Its advanced formulation ensures a durable, flexible, and long-lasting finish, making it the ideal choice for a variety of applications.

Ideal Applications

Driveways – Delivers a hard-wearing and visually appealing surface with excellent resistance to daily wear and tear.

Patios & Walkways – Provides a smooth, seamless finish that enhances outdoor spaces while supporting natural drainage.

Public Spaces & Pathways – Offers a low-maintenance, slip-resistant solution ideal for areas with high foot traffic.

Commercial & Retail Areas – Creates an attractive, durable, and functional surface suited for business environments.

Swimming Pool Surrounds – Ensures a water-permeable, non-slip finish that enhances safety and drainage.

Playgrounds & Recreational Areas – Provides a safe, impact-resistant, and aesthetically pleasing surface for children’s play zones.

Fusion-Bound Resin Binder is designed to bond seamlessly with natural aggregates, forming a flexible yet robust surface that withstands environmental stresses. Its UV-stable composition prevents discoloration, while high permeability eliminates water pooling, reducing the risk of surface damage and cracking.

Parts & Composition

Fusion-Bound Resin Binder is a two-component polyurethane resin system, ensuring superior adhesion, strength, and weather resistance.

Component Breakdown:

Part A (Base Resin): A high-performance, solvent-free polyurethane providing exceptional flexibility, adhesion, and UV stability.

Part B (Hardener): A specialized isocyanate-based curing agent that reacts with Part A to form a strong, durable bond.

Additional Performance Enhancements:

  • Fine Aggregates/Binding Sand – Improves strength and ensures full resin penetration and adhesion.
  • Anti-Slip Aggregate/Glass Beads (Optional) – Enhances slip resistance, particularly on steep surfaces and high-traffic zones.
  • Accelerator Catalyst (Optional) – Optimizes curing time in colder conditions, maintaining surface integrity and performance.
  • Crack Reduction Mesh – Adds tensile stiffness to the resin-bound stone, helping prevent cracking and making it ideal for overlay applications.

This carefully balanced formulation guarantees a long-lasting, permeable, and visually appealing finish, while offering outstanding durability, flexibility, and resistance to harsh weather conditions.

How to Mix Fusion-Bound Resin Binder

Proper mixing is essential to achieve the desired quality and strength in your resin-bound surface. Follow these steps for optimal results:

Step 1: Prepare the Resin Binder

  1. Pour Part B (Hardener) into the Part A bucket.
  2. Mix using a low RPM mixer for 1 minute to ensure both components are fully blended.

Step 2: Add Aggregate to Forced Action Mixer

  1. Once the resin binder is mixed, add the dried aggregates (natural stone blend) into a forced action mixer.
  2. Ensure the stone is evenly distributed before adding the resin.

Step 3: Add the Mixed Resin Binder to the Aggregates

  1. Pour the pre-mixed resin (Part A + Part B) into the forced action mixer over the aggregates.
  2. Mix for 1 minute to ensure all aggregates are coated evenly.

Step 4: Add Sand/Binding Aggregate

  1. Add the sand or fine binding aggregates to improve strength and stability.
  2. Mix for an additional 2 minutes to ensure full incorporation.

Step 5: Empty the Mixer in Two Loads

  1. Once the mix is ready, empty half of the batch into a wheelbarrow.
  2. Fill a second wheelbarrow with the remaining mix, ensuring both loads are evenly timed.
  3. Do not let the second wheelbarrow mix significantly longer than the first. If necessary, pause the mixer until you’re ready to empty the second half.

Step 6: Apply the Resin Bound Mix

  • Immediately spread the mixed resin-bound material onto the prepared base using a steel float.
  • Aim for an even application at 15-20mm thickness.

Important Mixing Tips

Always pour Part B into Part A before mixing.
Use a forced action mixer—not a cement mixer—to ensure thorough blending.
Follow the correct order: Mix resin first, then add stone, then add resin to mixer, then add sand.
Mix in small, consistent batches to maintain uniformity.
Avoid over-mixing—stop the mixer when the second half is ready to empty.
Work efficiently to ensure resin doesn’t start curing before application.

Fusion-Bound Resin Binder provides an ideal balance of durability, flexibility, and aesthetic appeal for a variety of surfacing projects. Proper mixing ensures that the resin binds perfectly with aggregates, forming a seamless, long-lasting surface.
