The client wanted a durable and visually appealing driveway that adhered to the latest standards and was equipped to handle heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions. The driveway needed to be permeable and SUDS compliant to manage water runoff effectively. Additionally, the client requested integrated lighting for safety and aesthetic purposes.
Project Phases
- Site Assessment and PlanningOur team conducted a thorough site assessment to understand the terrain, existing drainage systems, and soil conditions. We discussed the client’s preferences and requirements, including the type of resin bound stones and the design of the integrated lighting.
- Excavation and Base Preparation
- Excavation: We excavated the existing surface to a depth of 350mm, removing all old materials and debris.
- Sub-Base Installation: A new permeable sub-base was installed using MOT Type 3 aggregate, ensuring it was compacted to provide a solid foundation.
- Levels and Drainage: Corrected levels across the site to ensure proper water runoff. We installed new drainage systems, including channel drains at strategic points to manage excess water effectively.
- Base Layer Installation
- We installed a hardcore sub-base to provide a robust foundation.
- A permeable tarmac base was then applied over the sub-base to ensure a long-lasting and proper base for the resin bound surface.
- Edge Preparation

- Installed edging restraints to define the boundary of the driveway. These were secured in place to ensure the resin bound surface remains intact over time.
- Inground LED Strip Installation
- Installed 150 meters of IP-rated LED strip lights along the edges of the driveway. The LED strips were carefully positioned to be covered with resin bound translucent stones, creating a seamless look without any visible plastic covers or trip hazards.
- Connected the LED strips to motion and light sensors, ensuring they only activate when needed, providing both energy efficiency and added security.
- Resin Bound Surface Installation
- Mixed and applied the resin bound aggregate, ensuring an even spread across the entire driveway. The translucent stones used over the LED strips ensured a uniform surface appearance.
- The resin was spread to a depth of 20mm, providing a durable and resilient surface capable of handling heavy traffic.
- Finishing Touches
- After the resin cured, we conducted a final inspection to ensure a flawless finish. Any minor imperfections were rectified, and the driveway was cleaned and prepared for client handover.
